Compiled and Visited By Margaret Cline Harmon
Genealogy is receiving a growing interest today from people worldwide. People are becoming aware that genealogical research goes beyond personal gratification. It affects many fields of study, from historical translation, to medical and genetic findings. For these reasons, it is crucial that research be correct and properly documented.
It is important that you properly cite your source of information in a precise and consistent manner. One good reference source is Cite Your Sources by Richard S. Lackey. He gives the following examples for documenting cemetery markers:
1. Headstone inscription for John Q. Jones, Cemetery Name, City, County and State. (Section #, Range # and Township.) Your name, date visited.
2. Headstone inscription for Jane Doe, Cemetery Name, City, County and State. (Driving directions.) Your name, date visited.
I personally visited many of the cemeteries and present a consolidated list of all known cemeteries for your use. Current directions on how to reach each cemetery is outlined, along with approximate number of graves in each cemetery. To further assist you I note which township each cemetery is located. The years of operation was obtained from the earliest date of death located, unless the cemetery has a caretaker that could give useful information.
The King's Highway Chapter of the Daughter's of the American Revolution in Sikeston, Missouri surveyed and gathered information on the cemeteries within Scott County between October 15, 1979 and April 17, 1981. They list the detail in Cemetery Records of Scott County, Missouri - Vol. I & Vol. II. They published the two-volume set in 1982. Regrettably, the two volume set of books are now out of print but many local libraries have copies available in their reference section. The directions in their books are difficult to follow.
There are still unidentified family cemeteries to be documented. I am currently looking for the Glassock and Pigg Cemeteries near Morley. If you find a cemetery not listed in this book, please write or call me with the information. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to photograph and document it.

Rootwad TownshipTo assist you in locating desired cemeteries, I have included township maps with the location marked using a numbering system. The Index of Cemeteries contains the Number, Name and Township of each cemetery. I hope this tool will help you locate the cemetery with your relatives. Researching your family history may become addictive. You don't know exactly what you will find once you get into cemeteries, newspapers and court records. It is the mystery of the unknown that makes the search so intriguing.
Good luck in your search!
